Difficulty Levels
NodeBook offers a progressive learning experience through different difficulty levels. Each level unlocks new features and capabilities, allowing you to start simple and gradually master advanced concepts.
Overview
The difficulty level system is designed to help you learn NodeBook at your own pace. You can change your difficulty level at any time through the Preferences panel, and you'll immediately see how the interface adapts to your chosen level.
Available Difficulty Levels
🟢 Easy Level
Perfect for beginners
- Role Selection: Automatic (defaults to "individual")
- Parse Button: Not available
- Form Features:
- Basic node creation only
- No qualifiers, quantifiers, adverbs, or modality
- CNL Editor: Read-only view of your knowledge graph
- Morphs: Not visible
- Collaboration: Can post messages and seek help
Best for: Learning the basics of NodeBook and understanding how knowledge graphs work.
🟡 Moderate Level
For users ready to explore more features
- Role Selection: Individual and Class roles available
- Parse Button: Basic parsing enabled
- Form Features:
- Adjectives (qualifiers) enabled
- No adverbs, quantifiers, or modality yet
- CNL Editor: Read-only view
- Morphs: Not visible
- Validation: Can validate propositions created by easy level users
Best for: Users who understand the basics and want to add more detail to their knowledge structures.
🔵 Advanced Level
For experienced users
- Role Selection: Individual, Class, and Process roles available
- Parse Button: Basic and advanced parsing enabled
- Form Features:
- Adjectives (qualifiers) enabled
- Adverbs enabled
- Quantifiers enabled
- No modality yet
- Morph Management: Full morph capabilities
- Transitions: Can create transitions between nodes
- CNL Editor: Full editing capabilities with save functionality
- Validation: Can validate propositions from moderate and easy levels
Best for: Users who want to create complex knowledge structures and explore advanced features.
🔴 Expert Level
For power users
- Role Selection: All four roles available (Individual, Class, Process, Function)
- Parse Button: Full parsing capabilities
- Form Features:
- All features enabled (adjectives, adverbs, quantifiers, modality)
- Morph Management: Full capabilities
- Transitions: Can create complex transitions
- CNL Editor: Full editing with save/parse functionality
- Derived Functions: Can be added
- Sentence Connectives: Enabled for composing propositions into arguments
- Validation: Can validate propositions from all levels
Best for: Advanced users who want to leverage all of NodeBook's capabilities.

How to Change Your Difficulty Level
- Open the Preferences panel
- Look for the Difficulty Level dropdown
- Select your desired level
- The interface will immediately update to reflect your choice
Progression Tips
Starting with Easy Level
- Focus on creating basic nodes and understanding the interface
- Use the CNL view to see how your knowledge is structured
- Don't worry about advanced features - they'll be available when you're ready
Moving to Moderate Level
- Start using adjectives to add more detail to your nodes
- Experiment with different roles (Individual vs Class)
- Use the parse button to help structure your descriptions
Advancing to Advanced Level
- Explore morph management for complex nodes
- Use quantifiers and adverbs to add precision
- Create transitions to show relationships between different states
Mastering Expert Level
- Leverage all available features for maximum expressiveness
- Use modality to express uncertainty or probability
- Create complex knowledge structures with derived functions
Need Help?
If you're unsure which difficulty level is right for you, start with Easy and gradually increase as you become more comfortable with the features. You can always change your difficulty level at any time through the Preferences panel.
Remember: The difficulty level system is designed to help you learn progressively. Don't feel pressured to use advanced features before you're ready!
